【Ingredient Analysis】
Vitamin A (Retinol)
Also known as Retinol, a derivative of Vitamin A. In the skin, retinol must first be converted into retinaldehyde and then into retinoic acid to exert its full benefits, in a milder form than the latter two. Retinol is one of the most commonly used anti-aging and anti-wrinkle ingredients, known for its comprehensive efficacy:
- Reduces collagen loss and stimulates its regeneration, significantly boosting collagen levels and improving skin elasticity and texture.
- Rebuilds elastin, restoring the skin’s structural support to improve sagging and firmness.
- Accelerates the renewal and metabolism of keratinocytes, helping to shed dry, dull dead skin cells while promoting healthy cells to the surface. This results in a more hydrated and radiant look, while also strengthening the skin barrier.
- Disperses melanin evenly within skin cells to break down dark spots and uneven skin tone, helping to fade pigmentation and brighten the complexion.
- Speeds up acne healing and repair, preventing post-inflammatory pigmentation and reducing acne scars.
- Reduces blackheads and whiteheads.
- Refines enlarged pores caused by oiliness or skin laxity.
- Boosts natural moisturising factors and restores the skin's natural hydration.
- Helps diminish fine lines around the eyes and neck.
Anti-inflammatory & Repairing
- Vitamin B3: Helps regulate oil production, reduces inflammation and support ceramide synthesis.
-Glycyrrhiza inflata Bat.: Soothes inflammation and promotes a more even complexion
Moisturizing
- Sodium Hyaluronate: Retains a mass moisture to provide long-lasting hydration to the skin

【Q&A】
Q1: Will it cause allergies or breakouts?
Vitamin A can be irritating, depending on its concentration and penetration technology. Traditional retinol acts quickly on the skin and may cause discomfort, especially at high concentrations (e.g., 1%), which often leads to redness and stinging. While high concentrations offer faster results, it really depends on your preference.
The Preface adopts a low concentration (0.3%) combined with polyol encapsulation technology, allowing it to release slowly within the skin and significantly reducing irritation&mdashso no worries about allergic reactions.
Q2: Can it be used together with AHAs?
Yes, and using them together can enhance skin renewal results. AHAs/BHAs exfoliate the outermost layer of dead skin, while retinol speeds up cell metabolism from the deeper layers, promoting comprehensive skin renewal from within.
The idea that they can’t be used together stems from high-concentration formulas. If both your AHA and retinol products are highly concentrated and cause irritation when used alone, combining them is indeed not recommended.
However, The Preface’s Vitamin A Serum and Roselle Exfoliating Serum are beginner-friendly and low in concentration&mdashsafe to use together for non-sensitive skin types.
Q3: Can I use it with vitamins B and C?
Yes, you can.
But why do some people say it's not suitable due to pH differences? That’s only true for formulas not designed to be used together.
Vitamins A, B, and C can all work in neutral pH environments. As long as the formulation is neutral, there’s no issue of pH or ingredient conflict. Even if there are pH differences, mixing them doesn’t typically cause problems&mdashmany of the warnings are based on speculation rather than solid evidence, so there’s no need to be overly concerned.
Q4: Is “Vitamin C in the morning, Vitamin A at night” the rule?
That’s one of the ways to use them and it works well. Vitamin C helps protect skin cells from oxidative damage caused by UV exposure, making it great for daytime use. Vitamin A supports cell regeneration and repair, making it ideal for nighttime routines.
Can't we swap the two in the day and night, nor use them at the same time? Not necessarily. Vitamin C also stimulates collagen and The Preface's Vitamin C Anti-Oxidant & Whitening Serum includes niacinamide (Vitamin B3), which helps with skin repair&mdashso using it at night is also beneficial. Retinol isn’t typically used during the day due to photosensitivity, but if you’re staying indoors without exposing to sunlight, morning use is also possible.
Q5: Will it cause more acne and breakouts?
It might&mdashbut not always.
Retinol promotes exfoliation, and any exfoliating ingredient carries the possibility of “purging". However, retinol isn’t causing new acne; rather, it's removing the dead skin that clogs pores, allowing hidden comedones to come to surface as pimples or bumps. The comedones were already there&mdashyou just couldn’t see them. This is also a key reason your skin was not smooth before.

Q6: Can it be used under the eyes?
Yes, it can help reduce fine lines and dark circles.
Q7: If I have acne-prone skin, should I still use the Lavender Anti-Acne Serum?
Yes, it’s recommended to use it alongside Vitamin A. The Lavender Serum focuses on antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and soothing effects, making it a great complement to retinol.
The most effective serum combo for acne-prone skin: Vitamin A Anti-Wrinkle & Clearing Serum + Vitamin C Anti-Oxidant & Whitening Serum + Roselle Exfoliating Serum + Lavender Anti-Acne Serum.

“Dehydration Skin” or “Dry Lines" are usually signs of accumulated dead skin. And if you're noticing more bumps and breakouts as you age, it's often due to infrequent exfoliation.
Many of our customers with acne-prone skin didn’t exfoliate regularly. After using our Roselle Exfoliating Serum, which speeds up skin renewal, they saw visible improvements in dullness and clogged pores in a short time.
Can Vitamin A Serum replace Roselle Exfoliating Serum? Some people have heard that Vitamin A and AHAs shouldn’t be used together 🤔
We can’t speak for other brands' formulas, but ours can be used together safely.
✅ So what’s the difference between the two?
AHAs: Work on the surface by breaking down the bonds between skin cells, making it easier for old, dead skin to shed.
Vitamin A: Targets the deeper layers, stimulating the production of new skin cells. This helps push up healthier cells to the surface, addressing the root cause of slow metabolism.
✅ Can we use them together?Yes. AHAs remove dead skin from the surface while Vitamin A pushes up new skin from the deep inside. The two complement each other perfectly and should absolutely be used together&mdashif you’re using The Preface’s formulas.
⚠️ Important Note: This advice only applies to these two specific products from The Preface. If you are using products from other brands, we’re unable to advise or comment on their compatibility.
